Formal & Dress Hats

Formal hats have a longer and more varied history in menswear and womenswear than almost any other category of accessories. For much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries a hat was simply part of the formal dress code, as expected as a jacket or a tie, and the hierarchy of hat styles mapped directly onto the hierarchy of occasions. White tie demanded a silk top hat. Black tie permitted a homburg. A morning coat at the races called for a top hat or a bowler depending on the era, the club, and the precise level of formality intended. That coded relationship between hat style and occasion has relaxed considerably, but the underlying principle remains: a well-chosen formal hat signals that the wearer has given genuine thought to how they are dressed.

The styles that belong in a formal and dress hat collection each occupy a specific place on the formality spectrum. The top hat sits at the very top, reserved for white tie events, state occasions, and certain race meetings where dress codes are still taken seriously. The homburg, with its single center crease and stiff brim, was the hat of choice for politicians and diplomats through the mid-twentieth century and remains one of the most distinguished options for black tie and morning dress. The bowler hat, or derby, occupies the middle ground of formal dressing, smart enough for city and business occasions while carrying less ceremony than the top hat or homburg. The dress fedora, in fine wool felt with a clean, understated finish, is the most accessible entry point into formal hat dressing, working with everything from a lounge suit to a smart overcoat.
